Instructions for use

General

  • CardioSignal is a mobile application and a CE class IIa marked medical device. The application is available for iOS and Android smartphones. CardioSignal utilizes a patented technology that is clinically proven to detect signs of atrial fibrillation with high accuracy (see: validation). If CardioSignal detects signs of atrial fibrillation in two consecutive measurements, you need a heart health assessment by a healthcare professional.

  • CardioSignal application is primarily intended to detect signs of atrial fibrillation. With the 1-minute measurement, you can also get vitals (heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate) which are intended for wellness use. You can follow vitals in trend view. Other important features include measurement history, measurement reminders and insights about heart health.

  • Atrial fibrillation causes irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate. Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders and a significant cause of ischemic strokes. It may present without any perceivable symptoms. Atrial fibrillation can be treated: timely medical management is very important to reduce the risk of health complications.

    Risk of developing atrial fibrillation increases with age and if you have, for example, high blood pressure, diabetes, unhealthy lifestyle, sleep apnea, or family history of atrial fibrillation. You can visit our Resources section for further details.

  • The CardioSignal application measures your heart motion. It harnesses motion sensors of a smartphone to assess how regularly your heart beats. This information can be used to detect signs of atrial fibrillation. The method, gyrocardiography, is a result of over 10 years of academic research and it has been validated in clinical studies. CardioSignal application is a class IIa medical device for detecting signs of atrial fibrillation.

  • You can install the application in the Apple AppStore and the Google Play store. You need to purchase a subscription after installing the application, or activate a sponsored access that, for example, your care provider may have offered. If you cannot install the application, it is possible your device is missing the required sensors, or the application is not yet available in your country. See: How can I make sure CardioSignal will work with my phone?

Before usage

  • Yes, the CardioSignal application has been available as a class IIa medical device since 2019. Precordior, the company behind CardioSignal, is an ISO 13485 and ISO 27001 certified medical technology company. Our technology is based on over 10 years of academic research and clinical studies.

  • Yes, there are restrictions of use which you can find in the application onboarding.

    • Persons who have a cardiac pacemaker may not use the application. Holding a cell phone powered on close to a cardiac pacemaker can create electromagnetic interference (EMI), which may cause the pacemaker to malfunction.

    • The application is intended for adults. The heart rate of children and young people have natural heart rate variability, which the application may interpret incorrectly. The heart rate can vary a lot according to respiration (sinus arrhythmia), in which case irregular respiration has a greater effect on the result and a normal rhythm might look irregular.

    • The measurement must not be performed in the following situations: the skin on the chest is damaged in the measurement area, or the phone is connected to a charger.

    In addition, you shouldn’t measure right after exercising, because your heart rate will be higher than usual. We always recommend measuring when you are relaxed. See ‘How do I measure correctly?’.

  • We have this restriction for your safety. Holding a cell phone powered on close to a cardiac pacemaker can create electromagnetic interference (EMI), which may cause a malfunction in the pacemaker.

    Typical pacemakers track your heart rhythm constantly. Therefore, CardioSignal is not able to provide added value in any case.

  • The best way to make sure CardioSignal will work on your phone is to install it from the Apple AppStore or Google Play store.

    If you cannot find the application in the app store, or it does not allow you to download the application, it may be because:

    • the operating system of your phone is too old

    • your phone is missing the required motion sensors

    • the phone model is not compatible for some other reason, or for example, may not be available in your country

  • No, a subscription needs to be purchased separately after account creation. You can find a direct link to subscription options inside the application.

Clinical considerations

  • • CardioSignal requires no additional hardware, just your smartphone. This is beneficial because your phone is most likely with you wherever you are.

    • Easy and quick measurements are important: it is easier to commit to a regular measurement routine. Regular measurements are important even if you do not experience any symptoms, as atrial fibrillation may present without any perceivable symptoms.

    • CardioSignal is reliable. Our technology is patented and clinically tested to detect signs of atrial fibrillation with 96% accuracy.

  • If you suffer from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, CardioSignal can be used to detect when an episode of atrial fibrillation is taking place.

    If you suffer from permanent atrial fibrillation, CardioSignal does not offer additional information on your condition: In this case, it has already been established that you have atrial fibrillation. However, CardioSignal may be useful to keep track of your vitals and follow heart health related insights in the Blog.

  • The intended use of CardioSignal is to detect signs of atrial fibrillation in adults over 18 years of age. If you have another arrhythmia, CardioSignal may provide you with ‘Signs of atrial fibrillation detected’ result. In such a case, it is however important you see a healthcare professional.

    CardioSignal cannot

    • detect other arrhythmias than atrial fibrillation

    • detect embolism nor stroke

    • detect heart attacks. If you ever experience chest pain, pressure, tightness, or what you think is a heart attack, call emergency services immediately

    • other cardiac or cardiovascular diseases

    If you are not feeling well, or you have any symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

  • Please discuss with your doctor what kind of atrial fibrillation detection method is suitable for you, taking into account your medical condition and possible risk factors for atrial fibrillation.

    If you suspect another arrhythmia but there is no diagnosis yet, it is important to note that:

    - A healthcare professional is always needed to establish a diagnosis.

    - CardioSignal application may have difficulty differentiating between a large number of atrial extrasystoles (other forms of cardiac arrhythmia) and atrial fibrillation.

    Regular measurements may be beneficial in order to keep track of how often you experience irregular heart rhythm.

Subscriptions & payment options

  • There are three subscription periods and prices available: one month (4,99€), three months (13,99€), and one year (34,99€). The subscription is renewed automatically according to the subscription period selected. For example, a one-month subscription renews every month, and is billed before the beginning of each new subscription period.

  • You can manage your app purchases and related subscriptions at any time in your phone settings.

    If you can’t find it on your phone, go to CardioSignal and open ‘Profile’ from the top right corner of the Activity screen → Tap ‘Subscription’ → Manage subscriptions.

    The subscription plan cannot be updated during the current subscription period. Read more about Apple and Google instructions concerning a change in subscription:

  • Unfortunately not, CardioSignal requires purchasing a subscription after installing the application and creating an account.

  • There is always the possibility to request a refund if you are not satisfied with an app store purchase. Apply for a refund within 48 hours to ensure a smooth processing with app stores:

  • Payments are managed on your phone, through Google Play or App Store. The payment options in the application stores are:

    • A credit or debit card, in which case the card information is linked to the application store account information

    • Redeem a Google Play or App Store gift card, gift code, or promotional code

    • A Paypal account

    • Carrier billing is possible in some countries.

    Google and Apple will ask you to confirm the purchase before you are charged.

  • No. CardioSignal is a mobile application and the payment methods are tied to the payment options available in app stores. As a result, we cannot tailor them based on customer requests.

  • The following do not require linking you credit/debit card information to your app store account:

    GooglePlay or AppStore gift card or code

    • Carrier billing, if supported by your mobile carrier

  • No, we do not have access to your credit card, as all payments go through app stores. You alone manage your app subscription in your phone settings.

  • Logging into your account is needed for subscription and payment management. Our payment system works via Google Play or the App Store where you install and purchase applications on your phone.

    • Your subscription is linked to the account with which the subscription is purchased.

    • In order for the application to verify the subscription, you must be signed into this account on your phone.

    • Please note that your CardioSignal user account can be created with another email address than the one linked to you application store account.

  • All our subscriptions renew automatically. You can cancel your subscription in advance, or at least 24hrs before the next subscription period starts to ensure the subscription won’t (accidentally) renew. After cancelling your subscription, you can use the measurement function until the end of the paid subscription time (1/3/12 months).

  • Restoring the subscription is needed. Follow these steps:

    Tap the ‘START’-button → Select ‘Restore Purchase’’ → The subscription is restored, and you can continue taking measurements. If this does not help, please contact support@cardiosignal.com.

Sponsored access to CardioSignal

  • Instructions are usually provided to you via email when you sign up to a sponsored atrial fibrillation detection program. If you did not receive instructions, check your spam folder first and then contact support@cardiosignal.com for further assistance.

  • Our support will be able to resolve the issue without delay. Please contact support@cardiosignal.com.

  • Please wait for 10 minutes and remember to also check your spam email folder just in case. If the problem persists, please contact support@cardiosignal.com.

Signing in & Password

  • A valid email address and a password.

    1) Enter your email address and a preferred password on the application’s Sign Up-tab.

    2) The application instructs if the password is not valid. See What are the password requirements? for more information if you have trouble.

    3) Verify your account by opening a verification link sent to your email address. Please check your junk email folder as well.

  • The account verification email might have gone to your junk email folder. Please check your junk email folder.

    If your email is working normally, and you can’t find the email in your junk email folder, please contact us at support@cardiosignal.com for further assistance.

  • Setting up a user account is needed to provide you the best possible service securely.

  • • Make sure you are on the Sign Up-tab while creating the account.

    • Make sure you are using a valid email address – your user account needs to be verified by opening a link sent to that email address.

    • If you got an error message ’We’re sorry, something went wrong when attempting to sign up’ you might already have a user account created with that email address. Try signing in on the Log In-tab.

  • After the user account has been verified, you can sign in to CardioSignal with your credentials on the application’s Log In-tab.

  • You can change your password by selecting the ’Forgotten your password?’ option on the application’s Log In’-view.

    • If you are signed in, log out first under ‘Profile’.

    • Tap the ‘Forgotten your password?’ option on the app’s Log In- view

    • You will receive an email for changing the password. Remember to check the junk email folder as well.

    • Open the *-marked link at the end of the message or copy it to your phone's browser and set a new password

  • The requirements for a valid CardioSignal password are:

    1) At least 8 characters in length

    2) Contains at least 3 of the following 4 types of characters:

    • Lower cases (a-z)

    • Upper cases (A-Z)

    • Numbers (ie. 0-9)

    • Special characters (e.g. !@#$%^&*)

  • 1) Make sure you are on the Log In-tab while signing in.

    2) Has the account email been verified? If not, signing in is not possible yet. Please go to your email and confirm your email by clicking the email confirmation link.

    3) Search for possible typos with Eye-icon.

    4) Change the password if needed, see How do I change my password?

  • CardioSignal login session should not time out in active use. In the rare case that this happens, log in again with your credentials.

    The application requests you to login again if you sign out of the application, if you have not used the application for 2 months, and every 6 months regardless of the measurement activity.

  • No, unfortunately, the email address cannot be changed. However, you can create a new user account on the application’s Sign Up-tab. Please note that the measurement history from the old user account cannot be transferred to the new user account.

  • Yes. You can view your earlier measurement results by using the same CardioSignal account.

    If you changed phone models from Android to iPhone, subscriptions are not automatically the same. You need to cancel your old subscription and purchase a new subscription using the new phone.

Measuring

  • Measuring with CardioSignal is easy.

    Before the measurement:

    - Do not measure right after exercising.

    - Remove any thick clothing, such as a jacket.

    Starting the measurement:

    - Lie on your back and relax.

    - Press Start.

    - Place the phone in the middle of your chest with the screen facing upward.

    - Keep your hands in a relaxed position at your sides.

    - Be still. Do not talk or cough during the measurement.

    After 1 minute, the analysis is complete and the application displays the results.

    If, in a rare case, you get repeatedly unsuccessful measurements with your smartphone, please remove the protective casing from your phone and try again.

  • We recommend measuring regularly, preferably twice daily. Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, and it may occur only occasionally and without symptoms. That is why regular measurements maximize the possibility of detecting signs of atrial fibrillation.

  • The measurement lasts 60 seconds. The end of the measurement is indicated by a sound, and by a vibration if the sound and vibration features are turned on.

  • If you repeatedly get unsuccessful measurements, please remove protective casing from your phone. Also, we ask that you remove any auxiliary device connected to the phone that would prevent your phone from being positioned flat on your chest when taking the measurement.

  • If you suspect that your phone casing might interfere with the measurement or you get several measurement errors, please remove the protective casing.

    Some type of protective casings (e.g. thick and soft) can disturb the measurement and the small chest movements that the application records and analyzes. Wallet and or flip cases can cause problems, especially, if the cover is turned under the phone during measurement.

  • Try the following tips:

    o Try placing a pillow under your head to get a better positioning.

    o Remove clothing that might cause the phone to move. You can also try taking a measurement on bare skin.

    o A thin protective casing may sometimes help the phone to stay still during the measurement.

  • Place the phone in the middle of your chest with the phone screen facing upwards.

    Make sure the phone stays still and does not slide during the measurement. One way to find the optimal place for the phone is to put 2-3 fingers between the upper edge of the phone and the upper edge of the sternum.

    Do not hold the phone with your hand during the measurement.

  • A measurement can be interrupted during the measurement by touching the counter or the Cancel button. The measurement is also interrupted if the application is moved to the background while measuring.

  • No, unfortunately, it is not possible to remove a reading/delete a measurement from the measurement history.

    We want to keep the measurement history as accurate as possible and to prevent accidental deletion of measurements.

  • The history might seem empty if for example you have not made measurements during the current week, or the month has just recently changed.

    Try changing the calendar view from Week to Month on the Activity view. You can also search for previous measurements by changing the month from <- button on the left side of the selected month.

  • Yes. The Wi-Fi or mobile internet connection must be turned on when using the application. Please note that the use of mobile data may cause additional costs depending on the phone subscription, especially when you are abroad.

Results

  • Repeat the measurement as instructed by CardioSignal, and carefully follow the instructions for correct measurement. If, after two consecutive measurements, CardioSignal detects signs of atrial fibrillation, you need a heart health assessment by a healthcare professional. Show your CardioSignal records to your healthcare provider. The assessment may include at least an ECG examination.

  • Please make sure that you have followed the instructions for using CardioSignal. See for example ‘Are there situations when I shouldn’t use CardioSignal?’ as well as ‘How do I measure correctly?’.

    If CardioSignal detects signs of atrial fibrillation, you should always see a medical professional for further evaluation. If you have done this and the result persists, there are certain things you can consider:

    Exceptionally low or high resting heart rate

    • For adults, a low resting heart rate (50 bpm or lower) and the irregular chest movement caused by breathing may interfere with the results. You can try holding your breath for 10 to 20 seconds during the measurement process to see if “Signs of atrial fibrillation” result persists.

    • If your resting heart rate is above 130 bpm, please wait until your heart rate is lower and repeat the measurement. If your heart rate is persistently over 130 bpm, you should contact your healthcare provider.

    Problems with sensors

    • Remove a protective casing and auxiliary devices from your phone to ensure they do not reduce the phone’s sensors ability to detect heart motion

    • Try turning your phone off and on again

    • If you suspect problems with the measurement, please contact support@cardiosignal.com

  • Keep taking regular measurements. We recommend measurements in the morning and in the evening. Regular measurements are important because atrial fibrillation can also occur occasionally and without symptoms.

  • If the measurement is unsuccessful, repeat the measurement. Check the measurement instructions to ensure that you have performed the measurement according to the instructions. It is also possible that:

    • The phone moved during the measurement. If the phone detects excessive movement during the measurement, the measurement will be interrupted as unsuccessful.

    • The measurement data cannot be interpreted. The data produced by the motion sensors is unreadable for some reason.

    • The phone was in the wrong position during measurement. The phone must be in the most horizontal position possible.

    • The measurement has been performed, for example, on a table and the heart signal was not detected.

    • The heart rate was outside the 30–160 beats per minute range. Measure the heart rate in some other way in order to ensure that this is not the reason.

    • Rebooting the phone is needed. Some phone models are reported to provide erroneous sensor data but turning the phone off and on again may fix the problem.

    • If the measurement fails repeatedly, contact us at support@cardiosignal.com

Other features & Settings

  • The Vitals section of the Result view displays the average heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and respiration. They are meant for wellness and providing you with further insights about your heart health. Of these, HRV is shown only if no signs of atrial fibrillation were detected in the measurement. It is also possible that the HRV value shows N/A. Sometimes, the application is not able to calculate the HRV result. Please note that the accuracy of the medical result (detecting signs of atrial fibrillation) is independent of the accuracy of vitals.

    Because vitals are for wellness use, they cannot be used for medical assessment. The manufacturer claims no responsibility for the correctness of these results.

  • Heart rate tells you how often your heart beats in a minute (bpm=beats per minute). Do not take the measurement after exercising, because your heart rate will be unnaturally high.

  • The respiration rate estimate is based on the up and down movements of your chest while you breath. Sometimes, the estimate can vary due to your breathing technique during the measurement. Please note that the accuracy of the medical result (detecting signs of atrial fibrillation) is independent of the accuracy of vitals. Vitals are meant for wellness use only.

  • If HRV or any of the Physiology/Vitals values displays N/A as a value, it was not possible to calculate the value in consideration. This could be due to poor sensor data quality or poor positioning of the phone during the measurement. Try repeating the measurement.

  • The HRV value given by different devices may vary due to different technology or measurement time used. CardioSignal HRV estimate is based on RMSSD (root mean square of successive differences) metrics, and it uses the one-minute measurement for the analysis.

  • Cardiogram displays a visualization of the heart signal during the measurement. Please note that the cardiogram is not an ECG curve, because the method used by the application is based on motion sensors.

  • CardioSignal application is designed to detect signs of atrial fibrillation, and clinically validated for this purpose. The Vitals should not be used for medical purposes or basis for medical decision-making, but they do provide additional insights and value to your measurements from wellness perspective.

  • Vitals results do not in any way reflect the application’s ability to detect signs of atrial fibrillation. CardioSignal application is designed for atrial fibrillation detection, and we have validated and conducted clinical studies specifically to confirm this capability.

    Our application can also be used for measuring Vitals (HRV, heart rate, breathing rate). This is not part of the application’s intended use, and as such, is non-medical information.

  • CardioSignal measurement results can exported out as a PDF document. The functionality can be found under Vitals -> Share for a chosen measurement result.

  • The Activity view on the application’s Activity screen shows your measurement activity of the selected week or a month. The Result view is divided into two tabs: Result (Medical, Atrial Fibrillation) and Vitals (HR, HRV, Respiratory rate and Cardiogram).

  • In the application settings.

    Open Profile from the top right corner of the activity screen -> Scroll down to Reminders under Measurements -> Select Set a reminder. Once you have set a desired reminder -> Tap Save

    Select the time of your choosing and the frequency (every day, on weekdays, on weekends) for the reminders.

  • Change the sound and vibration settings in the application settings.

    Open Profile from the top right corner of the activity screen -> Scroll down to Sound & vibration under Measurements -> Toggle sound and/or vibration ON or OFF. You can choose a preferred Sound from three available options (Ocean, Summer, Ambient).

    Please note that if the sound & vibration is set ‘OFF’ the sound and vibration indicating the end of measurement is not played. If you set the sound OFF but leave the vibration ON, the phone will lightly vibrate indicating the measurement has ended.

  • In the application settings.

    Open Profile from the top right corner of the activity screen -> Scroll down to Language under Settings.

  • Open 'Profile' from the top right corner of the Activity screen

    The user account is visible at the top of the screen.

  • The application is a class IIa medical device for detecting signs of atrial fibrillation, with a long history of academic research and clinical studies as basis. You can find useful tips for preparing for a doctor’s visit in our blog.

  • The health survey helps to assess atrial fibrillation related stroke risk. By answering the health survey, we can provide you with a more personalized experience and help you make informed decisions for your health. Answering the Health survey is voluntary. Choosing not to answer won’t affect the use of CardioSignal.

  • You can access the Quick guide by tapping the i-icon under the START-button. Instructions of Use can be read in full by selecting Instructions on the first screen of the Quick guide.

  • The Terms of Use can be found on our website and in the app under Profile and our website.

  • You can unsubscribe from email communication at the end of every email.

  • No, CardioSignal is not currently compatible with Apple Health kit.

  • 1) Close the application and open it again

    2) Make sure you are connected to the internet

    3) Check if the app needs to be updated

    4) Turn your phone off and on again

    If the problem persists, please contact support@cardiosignal.com for further support.

  • After reinstalling CardioSignal, you need to sign into the application again. If you have an active subscription, restoring the subscription is needed:

    Tap the ‘START’-button → Select ‘Restore Purchase’’ → The subscription is restored, and you can continue taking measurements.

  • The ‘Restore Purchase’ feature checks the status of your CardioSignal subscription. If the subscription is valid, the subscription is restored, and you can continue taking measurements. Restoring subscription may be needed after re-installing the application and sometimes after a re-login.

  • In order for the restore subscription to be successful, you must be signed in on your phone with the Apple ID or Google account with which you have purchased the subscription. Check the status of your subscription in your phone settings. If you need help, contact support@cardiosignal.com

App problems

Technology & Privacy

  • Modern smartphones include built-in and sensitive motion sensors (gyroscope and accelerometer). Gyrocardiography harnesses these sensors to measure heart motion. This technology is patented and rigorously validated in several clinical studies. In clinical studies, it is found to have 95.3% sensitivity (the ability to detect atrial fibrillation) and 96.0% specificity (the ability to detect if you don’t have atrial fibrillation). Our team continues to focus on scientific research and collaborates with several universities and hospitals on clinical studies and trials for other heart disease applications.

  • We classify the measurement results (whether signs of atrial fibrillation are detected or not) as health information. We need your consent for processing this data in order to provide you with our service.

  • No.

  • Item description
  • CardioSignal sends the measurement data to a secure cloud service, where the data is encrypted and stored in our database. CardioSignal may save data, such as measurement history, in the cache of the application. This data is needed, for example, to speed up the startup of the application. You can read more about privacy and data in our Privacy Notice.

  • We have several safeguards in place to ensure that the information you provide us remains safe.

    • We are ISO 27001 certified for information security

    • We implement rigorous processes and procedures in our organization, such as training, and regular evaluation and assessment of measures taken.

    • We regularly conduct third-party security audits.

    • All data sent to a secure cloud service are transferred via an encrypted connection, and all our databases are encrypted. Databases are encrypted using modern security algorithms.

    • Our databases and servers are located in our partners’ high-availability data centers, and our partners have certified facilities against several standards, e.g. ISO/IEC 27001:2013, 9001:2015, CSA STAR CCM v3.0.1.

    • We use modern password encryption algorithms in our application and servers.

Discontinuing CardioSignal

  • You can cancel your CardioSignal application subscription at any time in your phone settings. This works slightly differently in iPhone and Android phones.

    You can easily access CardioSignal subscription management directly from the application as follows:

    • Open ‘Profile’ from the top right corner of the Activity screen → Tap ‘Subscription’ → Manage subscriptions >

    • You are then directed to your phone’s subscription management

    • To cancel the CardioSignal-subscription → Tap ‘Cancel subscription’

    or

    iPhone: You can terminate your subscription in the Settings menu. Open Settings -> iTunes and App Store -> click on Apple ID -> View Apple ID -> Subscriptions -> CardioSignal -> Cancel subscription.

    Android: You can terminate your subscription in the Google Play application. Open Google Play -> Open menu (found in the upper right corner) -> Choose subscriptions -> CardioSignal -> Cancel subscription.

    Please note that cancelling your paid subscription does not automatically delete your user account which contains your measurement data, see ‘How do I delete CardioSignal?’

  • Nothing - you can still access your measurement history on your user account after the subscription has been cancelled. You can also share your results if needed after cancellation. However, to re-active the measurement function, a subscription must be purchased.

  • Because our payment and subscription system work through the AppStore and Google Play, we are, unfortunately, unable to refund the price of the application directly to you.

    Therefore, you will need to contact Google Play and the AppStore to request a refund. See here for more information on applying for a refund

  • You can permanently delete your user account from the application settings:

    Log in to CardioSignal → Open ‘Profile’ from the top right corner of the activity screen→ Scroll to the end of the screen → Tap ‘Delete Account’.

    After this, you can delete the application from your phone. If you are unable to delete the account in the application, please contact support@cardiosignal.com for account removal request.

  • Your user account (email address) will be deleted from our database. Your measurement results, sensor data and possible health survey answers will remain in our database anonymized. Anonymized data means that we cannot identify you anymore, and the data that we have in our database cannot be linked to you in any way. We use anonymized measurement data only to improve our service and for research purposes as stated in our Privacy Notice.
